Genre-Spanning Hard Rock.
Unique and Relatable Storytelling.
Biography
Combining grit with melody, Chicago-based retro hard rockers Altered Root produce a unique blend of relatable singer-songwriter style storytelling with a heavy edge. Influenced by multi-generational genre-defining bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Pearl Jam, and stoner rock artists like All Them Witches and Kyuss tied together with lyrical concept masters Pink Floyd, The Who, and Rush the Altered Root digs into each member's leanings from metal, grunge, jazz, blues, and progressive rock. It’s riff-driven, album-oriented hard rock with layers and textures designed to evoke a soul reaction. The band released its debut double-LP, Drone, on March 4, 2026.
The core of the band was formed by professionals working in the world of business. Instead of selling coffee at Starbuck’s to pay rent and studio time, Altered Root members worked executive business roles to pay mortgages. Releasing the band’s first album at an over-40 age mark, Altered Root is devoted to telling a passionate and relatable story through thoughtful sonic combination of words and instruments only possible with many years of combined life experience.
Altered Root consists of: David Agee, Drums – professional drummer, enlisted officer in the U.S. Navy elite touring band which he won through a audition competition between thousands of drummers from around the country; Jeff Bergau, Bass – retired marketing executive and entrepreneur who left the world of business to focus on Altered Root; Sean Cimino, Voice – supply chain executive who manages some of the world’s largest OTC brands for a global pharmaceutical company; Patrick Dwyer, Lead Guitar – video game developer who has played a role on some of the most recognizable games in the industry, has played guitar since his high school band; Nick Kabat, Keyboard, Drums – a multi-instrumental talent who plays regularly in several Chicago Jazz, Rock, and Progressive bands; and Brad Urhausen, Rhythm and Acoustic Guitar – a national employee benefits executive who plays often in his home town of Nashville.
About Drone
Drone chronicles the dark journey of an everyday, middle-aged suburban commuter. The story is set up by the album’s opening and title track, Drone, in which our protagonist is on a commuter train into the city to work the same drab and uninspiring job he has endured for decades. Downtrodden, he reflects on his life. The first LP of the double-LP set is a heavy trip into decisions he made along the way. His self-inflicted and self-limiting suffering play out in relatable, often semi-autobiographical, life-scenes set to gritty tones and aggressive riffs. From darkly optimistic start to his own slacker behavior to a bad marriage. From an unhealthy obsession to consume and acquire to hitting rock bottom. The second LP begins to be more refined and melodic as Drone Man’s soul begins to stir. From themes of insomnia and isolation to awakening and redemption and an ending left to the mind of the listener. It’s an hour-long journey written to inspire and to be consumed whole. Played loud on vinyl like the original concept album masters. Unique sonic elements are ubiquitous, especially with a good set of headphones and perhaps an Altered consciousness aid.

Connected through membership in Altered Stage, a private club for musicians founded by Bergau, and formed in a shared passion to create after many live cover performances together, Drone has been a decade in the making. Slowly percolating in the background since the band released an early, original version of Drone in 2015, the project began to gain momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic. Creating the foundation for eleven of the album’s 14 songs out of as much of a necessary mental health exercise as a drive to get Drone Man’s story out into the world, the band created the core of the tracks remotely and authentically without AI. Completely unrehearsed and working from demo tracks from Nashville, Connecticut, Hawaii, Virginia, Silicon Valley, and Chicago, Altered Root recorded all of the new material in four different studio sessions at Palisade Studios in Chicago.

"Drone"
Drone, the title track. Now streaming everywhere. It's the beginning of your hour-long hard rock journey through life. Drone Man boards the train, starting another uninspiring day at work. Reflecting on his uninspiring life.
Drone Lyrics
Every day the same
Rolling to a paycheck
6:40 train
Drink my 40 on the way back
Soul’s nearly drained
Gotta be a way out
Signal in my brain
Stopping me with self-doubt
Drone no more, I’m clean and free
The Man ain’t got his grip on me
Drone no more, I’m my own man
Gotta engineer a plan
Drone no more, I’m clean and free
The Man ain’t got his grip on me
Drone no more, I’m my own man
Getting out, I know I can
Rolling to the main
Time’s moving faster
Cube sits and waits,
There to please the Master
Drone no more, I’m clean and free
The Man ain’t got his grip on me
Drone no more, I’m my own man
Gotta engineer a plan
Drone no more, I’m clean and free
The Man ain’t got his grip on me
Drone no more, I’m my own man
Step on out, as fast as you can
Time for a change
Bell’s ringing louder
No one left to blame
‘Cause I’m my biggest doubter
Drone no more, I’m clean and free
The Man ain’t got his grip on me
Drone no more, I’m my own man
Gotta engineer a plan
Drone no more, I’m clean and free
The Man ain’t got his grip on me
Drone no more, I’m my own man
Escape now, don’t think I can
Drone Man's Soul is Stirring
"Life Between Life"
Life Between Life. The track that kicks off the second half of our concept album experience lyrically and sonically. A moody groove that packs a punch at the end.
It's where Drone Man begins to wake and look around. Pulling himself forward from the dark bottom he reaches at the end of the first half of the album.
Life Between Life Lyrics
Running from thing to thing
What’s to show?
Searching for life between life
And so
Try to find time for me
But in the flow
There’s no life between life
Lost in a fantasy
There I go
Looking for life between life
And so.
Snap back to reality
Feeling low
Don’t see the life between life
I cant’ see
What’s in front of me
Even though
It’s all I know
Erasing my memory
Watch it go
Seeing there’s life between life
Feeling there’s no such thing
‘Cause I know
My whole life is just life
I can see
Right in front of me
Connectivity
Between me and me
The Trip Downward
"Last Life"
In Last Life Drone Man punches himself in the face in this hard-driving, NWOBHM-influenced scorcher.
The third song on the Drone concept album, Drone Man begins his descent downward. Self-isolated and addicted to video games, he ignores all responsibility and enters a dark, digital world.
Last Life Lyrics
Power on, reload your gun
Find your brother, kill him for fun
Level up, get in their head
10 points, another one dead
Making a name, not your given one
It’s more than a game, more than just fun
Buzzkill6 you’re getting known
Commanding attention, you still feel alone
Elite in status, you join a clan
Deep in the round, you feel like a man
XP your currency
Earning more, your urgency
Enter your cheats, plug in your hacks
Get banned, grind your way back
Smurf around its the easy way
Cheese out, that’s your scrub to slay
Dine on Cheetos, you slam Mountain Dew
Online you’re a God, but of who?
Bipedal creatures outside
Living out life while you hide
No thoughts of women, headset's your friend
Intellect bending, health at an end
Wake up, ask where time went
Too late, your last life is spent
Compensating
"For Me"
Tight, hard-driving, and sitting somewhere in between post-grunge and alternative metal. The fifth song on the album, For Me sets up Drone Man's plunge into darkness.
Obsessive acquisition, greed, and gluttony, Drone Man is compensating for something. But is it enough?
For Me Lyrics
I’m born
Change the world
For me
Poor
Building my
Story
Roar
Feel like I’m
Soaring, so high
Ratchet down
Getting my rhythm
I feel my hands
Warming
Stretching out
Follow my heroes like
Gecko on
Wall Street
Look around
Try to stay current but
Keeping up
Poorly
Burning down
Low on serotonin
I need a drink
Sorely
Find a used Benz today
Pockets empty but
Buy now, can’t wait
Hands off, that’s mine
It’s all for me
Eat the full-stock buffet
Stomach bloated but
Send more my way
Hands off, that’s mine
It’s all for me
Buy a big house - no maid
Drain my savings
What 401k?
Hands off, that’s mine
It’s all for me
Snag a big job, get paid
Earn a dollar and
Piss two away
Hands off, that’s mine
It’s all for me
